Meet the Producer Behind the Roster: How Bear Cole Brings the 1st Drop Music Family Together
An Inside Interview with the Founder and Creative Force of 1st Drop Music
At the center of 1st Drop Music—Arizona’s genre-bending, fiercely independent label—is Bear Cole. Producer, songwriter, DJ, engineer, mentor, and cultural connector, Bear isn’t simply the label’s founder. He’s the through-line—the creative force linking every artist, project, and sound within the 1st Drop ecosystem.
From Flagstaff’s pine-covered mountains to Tucson’s neon desert nights, Bear has helped shape not only his own evolving catalog but the identity of every release under the 1st Drop Music umbrella. In this conversation, he reflects on how the label began, how collaboration fuels the roster, and why Arizona remains central to its future.
The Origins of 1st Drop Music
What inspired the creation of the label?
“My motivation was simple—I love music,” Bear says. “I’ve watched incredibly talented friends sign deals, release one album, and then disappear. Years of work never saw the light of day. I wanted to release music on my own terms and help other artists do the same.”
He points to a persistent cultural myth—that creative work only matters if it leads to fame, awards, or massive tours. “What happened to doing something just because you love it?” he asks. “There are thousands of people out there who are amazing at what they do, even if they’re not famous. Music should be no different.”
For Bear, 1st Drop Music exists to serve those artists—the ones building quietly, creating honestly, and finding fulfillment simply in being heard.
From Old-School Labels to a New Music Reality
Bear’s perspective is shaped by experience. He ran a physical record label in the early 2000s, navigating CDs, vinyl, cassettes, and regional distribution—long before streaming reshaped the industry.
“It was a different world,” he recalls. “I could never make it sustainable without a day job, and that was hard to let go of.”
The turning point came with digital distribution and social media. “That shift removed so many barriers,” Bear explains. “It’s why I say 1st Drop Music isn’t really a label—it’s a music group. A collective of musicians helping each other make and release music.”
Profit may be scarce in the modern landscape, he admits, but creative freedom has never been greater.
The Producer Behind the Roster
Despite the roster’s wide stylistic range—from EDM and phonk to indie hip-hop, goth rock, and alt-country—1st Drop Music carries a cohesive energy. Much of that comes from Bear’s hands-on role as producer or co-producer across the catalog.
“I’ve worked almost every job in the music industry,” he says. “But nothing compares to producing music.”
A student of music history, Bear draws inspiration from the interconnected roots of American music—blues, hip-hop, country, rock, R&B—and their African, Latin, and Celtic influences.
As executive producer, his philosophy is simple: avoid imitation. “My number-one critique is always, ‘Why does this sound like someone else and not you?’ The goal is to make music that’s honest to the artist, not boxed into a genre.”
Collaboration Over Categories
Working with artists as varied as Turntable Kachina, WUUYUH, Feral Business, and Sagebrush & The Little Flowers doesn’t require a mental switch—it reflects how people already listen to music.
“Look at anyone’s playlists,” Bear says. “They’re eclectic. We’re just providing a soundtrack for life. Maybe someone comes for one artist, but we hope they stay and discover the rest.”
That philosophy extends to artist relationships. Collaboration, mentorship, and mutual inspiration define the label’s internal culture. “We believe in original music that borrows from influence without copying,” he explains. “That belief is shared across the roster.”
Arizona as Identity, Not Backdrop
Arizona isn’t just home to 1st Drop Music—it’s foundational to its sound.
“We’re deeply rooted in the Southwest,” Bear says. “Arizona has deserts, mountains, cold nights, brutal heat, and one of the most diverse cultural influences anywhere—Native, Latin, country, and West Coast energy all intersect here.”
He believes Arizona’s independent scene has often been overlooked because artists chased other cities’ identities. “I’ve been trying to figure out what Arizona sounds like since 1993,” he says. “We’re still building it—but every release gets us closer.”
Looking Ahead
With new bases in Tucson and Flagstaff, 1st Drop Music enters 2026 positioned for its most collaborative era yet. Upcoming projects include ARIZONA, DUST, Sanpaku Eyes, CORE, Behind You, Flower Power, Chewing Nails, and WUU Girl$, new artist releases, and a renewed focus on remixes and cross-roster collaborations.
“Collaboration is our main goal right now,” Bear says. “Internal, external—it doesn’t matter. If it motivates people and creates great music, it’s worth doing.”
Final Word
1st Drop Music isn’t driven by algorithms or trends. It’s driven by people—artists creating because they have to, not because they’re chasing validation.
In one sentence, Bear sums it up:
“1st Drop Music’s goal is to help listeners find talented artists and amazing songs from people who make music 100% for the love of it—from the 1st Drop.”
