Late Night King has achieved a major objective that Bear the Astronot set for himself when he began making music. What exactly does this mean? It means he has produced a body of work that exists somewhere in between several different styles of music (genres), but yet is unified in its overall feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6al96TRouY Late Night King is a song that Bear the Astronot wrote for his 2020 album with the same title. So what's special about this particular song? It represents an important accomplishment for Bear – a goal he's been striving towards ever since he started producing music. A quest, if you will. His goal is to produce music that lives in the realm of multiple styles and genres – while remaining cohesive. For decades, Bear the Astronot has been experimenting with combining styles of music – i.e., mixing genres. As many producers know however, the cohesiveness of those combinations are often less than ideal.

For example, a rock-rap song may be a perfect example of a cohesive blend of two styles of music. But Bear has spent those decades blending more than two styles of music in a cohesive manner – so much so that the goal itself is no longer apparent. And on the song Late Night King, he may have discovered the formula. Late Night King consists of elements of Indie, House, Hip Hop, Alternative and Pop.

However, upon listening to it, one would likely not recognize this fact. The listener is not saying to themselves, "This artist is attempting to blend Indie, House, Hip Hop, Alternative and Pop." According to Bear, the ultimate litmus test was selecting a genre. "I finished the song, and as is always the case had to start choosing the main genre before posting it to music sites and social media. The song was cohesive and I loved the sound, but I found myself having a very hard time choosing the genre to place it under." This is what makes the song unique. Listeners have responded positively to the song and stated how much they enjoy it. Yet, if you were asked to rank Late Night King on a continuum of genres, where would you place it? Is it possible that Bear has blended enough disparate elements into a single entity that he has created something new? Could it be a new genre?
