Alternative hip-hop artist Bear the Astronot based out of Arizona is recognized for his cutting lyrics and the way he blends a variety of different sounds and genres.

While I would not necessarily call him a rapper, I would also not dismiss him as such. He describes his music as "Southwest Soul," and combines influences from the Alternative side of Hip-Hop, Rock, Electronic, Country, and even Bluegrass. To Bear's ear, this is how Arizona sounds. Bear is his actual name, and while there are some exceptions, most of the music you hear will have been completely produced, written and recorded by Bear Cole. His influences may be so unique because his experiences have been so unique. He was born and raised living in The Grand Canyon National Park, just minutes away from the rim of the Grand Canyon. He also spent time attending school on the Navajo reservation in Northern Arizona. He lives in Tucson and Flagstaff, Arizona, which allows him to spend as much time in nature as possible. Some of his favorite outdoor activities include Hiking, Camping, Hunting, and Fishing.

While this description is not typical of a Hip-Hop artist, Bear has never attempted to cater. He was never able to shake his passion for Hip-Hop that developed from listening to artists such as Public Enemy, The Pharcyde, and Outkast as a child. He simply takes these influences and creates something that is reflective of himself, his experience, and what he appreciates about music. Bear also produces music ranging from instrumental world music and funk to EDM and Trap. If you're interested, you can check out Bear Cole and Turntable Kachina.

Music created by Bear the Astronot can be difficult to define. In many cases, it may differ significantly from what you consider Hip-Hop music to be. That's OK. I hope you will give it time to reach out to you and draw you up into space. Together you and Bear can drift among the stars, where music can be whatever the hell you want it to be, as long as it feels authentic.
